What is Sleep Paralysis? Sleep paralysis is a descriptive term that means being unable to move even though one feels conscious. It takes place when an individual passes between stages of sleep and wakefulness. During such a transition, a person may be unable to speak or move for anywhere from several seconds to several minutes. Some individuals even feel a sense of choking or an odd sensation of pressure. Sleep paralysis–or more accurately, the ability to be aware of it as it occurs–may accompany narcolepsy or other sleep disorders.
